My curiosities have strayed but always returned to the always changing world of Sports Entertainment. I spend most of my free time focusing on sports blogs, sports podcast and of course watching Sportscenter. I am more concerned with scheduling my job and class’s around watching games than what is good for myself. For example, weekends are when I make the most money at my job but I have been asking to have off of work on Sundays in the fall since June.
I tell my employer specifically my manager who makes the schedule that I need to have Sundays off because I need to watch football for my career. This is not a total fabrication because I am graduating and plan on working in the field of sports journalism. The media side of sports, the reporting, the pundits, the shows and of course the press conferences are as much a part of Sports now as the games themselves. It is a place to be a part of a world that seemed unachievable, as an ex high school athlete who saw all his dreams fall apart in ninth grade when he realized he would never dunk a basketball or grow any taller.
The concept of watching activities that I have no control over but so much at stake in (and no not excessive gambling debt) can seem weird when I step back and look at it. Why should I care that the New York Knicks have not won a Championship in over 40 years? or constantly brag to friends that the Yankees have 27 World Championships? It is because it is my escape from everyday activities.
